And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock ... to dress for the wayfaring man ... but took the poor man’s lamb, ...

Isa. 29:15 (to 1st ?), 16 (to 1st ?)

Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? ...

Matt. 15:29 (to 1st ,), 29 3rd and (to 2nd ,), 30, 31 2nd and

And Jesus departed from thence, ... and went up into a mountain, ...

And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:

... and they glorified the God of Israel.

Matt. 11:2, 3 (to 2nd ,), 4, 5

Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, ...

Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

Matt. 12:47–50

Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

John 10:24, 25, 30–32, 37, 38

Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. ...

I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? ...

If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

John 5:30 (to 1st :), 30 because; 6:28, 29

SH 268:-8 (only, to 1st ,), -5 That

That which was from the beginning, ... That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. — John, First Epistle.

SH 587:5 (only, to ;)

God. The great I am; ...

SH 588:21 the

... the only Ego.

SH 465:8 What, 9 God

... What is God?

... God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love.

SH 588:11–12 (to ;)

There is but one I, or Us, but one divine Principle, or Mind, governing all existence; ...

SH 586:9 (only, to .), 9 the

Father. ... the one Mind; the divine Principle, commonly called God.

SH 594:16 (only)

Son. The Son of God, the Messiah or Christ.

SH 31:4–8, 10

Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh. He said: “Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.” Again he asked: “Who is my mother, and who are my brethren,” implying that it is they who do the will of his Father. ... He recognized Spirit, God, as the only creator, and therefore as the Father of all.

SH 172:23–24

What is man? Brain, heart, blood, bones, etc., the material structure?

SH 468:9–10 There

... There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter.

SH 475:6 Man (only, to ;), 7–10, 11–13; 476:4

... Man is not matter; ... The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness. ... Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science. ...

... In divine Science, God and the real man are inseparable as divine Principle and idea.

SH 258:16–21

We know no more of man as the true divine image and likeness, than we know of God.

The infinite Principle is reflected by the infinite idea and spiritual individuality, but the material so-called senses have no cognizance of either Principle or its idea.

SH 476:9–11, 28–32; 477:4–5

God is the Principle of man, and man is the idea of God. Hence man is not mortal nor material. ...

When speaking of God’s children, not the children of men, Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you;” that is, Truth and Love reign in the real man, showing that man in God’s image is unfallen and eternal. ... Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.

SH 27:1–5 (to 3rd ,), 6

Jesus sent a message to John the Baptist, which was intended to prove beyond a question that the Christ had come: “Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, ... In other words: Tell John what the demonstration of divine power is, and he will at once perceive that God is the power in the Messianic work.

SH 136:9–10 (to .); 137:8–9, 16–17 (to ,), 17–21 Thou

The question then as now was, How did Jesus heal the sick? His answer to this question the world rejected. ...

Yearning to be understood, the Master repeated, “But whom say ye that I am?” ...

With his usual impetuosity, Simon replied for his brethren, ... “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God!” That is: The Messiah is what thou hast declared, — Christ, the spirit of God, of Truth, Life, and Love, which heals mentally.

SH 25:13–16, 22–26, 28–31

Jesus taught the way of Life by demonstration, that we may understand how this divine Principle heals the sick, casts out error, and triumphs over death. ...

Though demonstrating his control over sin and disease, the great Teacher by no means relieved others from giving the requisite proofs of their own piety. He worked for their guidance, that they might demonstrate this power as he did and understand its divine Principle. ... We must go and do likewise, else we are not improving the great blessings which our Master worked and suffered to bestow upon us.

SH 28:9–11

While respecting all that is good in the Church or out of it, one’s consecration to Christ is more on the ground of demonstration than of profession.

SH 343:4

James said: “Show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.”

SH 94:17–18

The progress of truth confirms its claims, and our Master confirmed his words by his works.

SH 442:19–22 When

When Christ changes a belief of sin or of sickness into a better belief, then belief melts into spiritual understanding, and sin, disease, and death disappear.

SH 302:14–18 let

... let us remember that harmonious and immortal man has existed forever, and is always beyond and above the mortal illusion of any life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter.

SH 477:9–13

Whatever is material is mortal. To the five corporeal senses, man appears to be matter and mind united; but Christian Science reveals man as the idea of God, and declares the corporeal senses to be mortal and erring illusions.

SH 250:6–7

Mortal existence is a dream; mortal existence has no real entity, but saith “It is I.”

SH 416:16–20

The material body, which you call me, is mortal mind, and this mind is material in sensation, even as the body, which has originated from this material sense and been developed according to it, is material.

SH 91:17

The denial of material selfhood aids the discernment of man’s spiritual and eternal individuality, and destroys the erroneous knowledge gained from matter or through what are termed the material senses.

SH 475:31–1 (to 2nd .); 476:9–13, 18–22

A mortal sinner is not God’s man. Mortals are the counterfeits of immortals. ...

... God is the Principle of man, and man is the idea of God. Hence man is not mortal nor material. Mortals will disappear, and immortals, or the children of God, will appear as the only and eternal verities of man. ... Sin, sickness, and death must disappear to give place to the facts which belong to immortal man.

Learn this, O mortal, and earnestly seek the spiritual status of man, which is outside of all material selfhood.

SH 263:1–5, 11–14

Mortals are egotists. They believe themselves to be independent workers, personal authors, and even privileged originators of something which Deity would not or could not create. The creations of mortal mind are material. ...

... Carnal beliefs defraud us. They make man an involuntary hypocrite, — producing evil when he would create good, forming deformity when he would outline grace and beauty, injuring those whom he would bless.

SH 316:3–7 (to 1st ,)

The real man being linked by Science to his Maker, mortals need only turn from sin and lose sight of mortal selfhood to find Christ, the real man and his relation to God, ...

SH 409:20

The real man is spiritual and immortal, but the mortal and imperfect so-called “children of men” are counterfeits from the beginning, to be laid aside for the pure reality. This mortal is put off, and the new man or real man is put on, in proportion as mortals realize the Science of man and seek the true model.

SH 248:13–18, 25–27 (to ,), 29

We are all sculptors, working at various forms, moulding and chiseling thought. What is the model before mortal mind? Is it imperfection, joy, sorrow, sin, suffering? Have you accepted the mortal model? Are you reproducing it? ...

To remedy this, we must first turn our gaze in the right direction, and then walk that way. We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, ... Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love — the kingdom of heaven — reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.

SH 209:31–1

Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God. It shows the superiority of faith by works over faith in words.

SH 90:24–25

The admission to one’s self that man is God’s own likeness sets man free to master the infinite idea.

SH 249:1–5

Let us accept Science, relinquish all theories based on sense-testimony, give up imperfect models and illusive ideals; and so let us have one God, one Mind, and that one perfect, producing His own models of excellence.

Let the “male and female” of God’s creating appear.

Christian Science Hymnals

Hymn. 195

Not what I am, O Lord, but what Thou art; / That, that alone can be my soul’s true rest; / Thy love, not mine, bids fear and doubt depart, / And stills the tumult of my troubled breast.

Girt with the love of God, on every side, / I breathe that love as heaven’s own healing air; / I work and pray, and follow still my guide, / And fear no foe, escaping every snare.

/ ’Tis what I know of Thee, my Lord and God, / That fills my soul with peace, my lips with song; / Thou art my health, my joy, my staff, my rod; / I lean on Thee, in weakness I am strong.

Words: Horatius Bonar*

Music: John Yoakley

Hymn. 406

O Love, our Mother, ever near, / To Thee we turn from doubt and fear! / In perfect peace our thoughts abide; / Our hearts now in this truth confide: / Man is the child of God.

O Light, in Thy light we can see / That man is ever one with Thee. / In love our lives Thou dost enfold, / And now our waiting hopes behold / That man is God’s own child.

O joy that ever will remain, / Midst seeming sorrow, hate, and pain, / Our hearts to fill with this glad song / That soars above the mists of wrong: / Man is the loved of Love.

Words: Margaret Glenn Matters

Music: A. L. Peace

Hymn. 51

Eternal Mind the Potter is, / And thought th’ eternal clay: / The hand that fashions is divine, / His works pass not away. / Man is the noblest work of God, / His beauty, power and grace, / Immortal; perfect as his Mind / Reflected face to face.

God could not make imperfect man / His model infinite; / Unhallowed thought He could not plan, / Love’s work and Love must fit. / Life, Truth and Love the pattern make, / Christ is the perfect heir; / The clouds of sense roll back, and show / The form divinely fair.

God’s will is done; His kingdom come; / The Potter’s work is plain. / The longing to be good and true / Has brought the light again. / And man does stand as God’s own child, / The image of His love. / Let gladness ring from every tongue, / And heaven and earth approve.
