For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES by MARY BAKER EDDY

SH 566:1–9

As the children of Israel were guided triumphantly through the Red Sea, the dark ebbing and flowing tides of human fear, — as they were led through the

wilderness, walking wearily through the great desert of human hopes, and anticipating the promised joy, — so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for them who love God.

SH 561:29–3

In the first chapter of the Fourth Gospel it is written, “There was a man sent from God . . . to bear witness of that Light.”

John the Baptist prophesied the coming of the immaculate Jesus, and John saw in those days the spiritual idea as the Messiah, who would baptize with the Holy Ghost, — divine Science.

SH 565:13–18

The impersonation of the spiritual idea had a brief history in the earthly life of our Master; but “of his kingdom there shall be no end,” for Christ, God's idea, will eventually rule all nations and peoples — imperatively, absolutely, finally — with divine Science.

SH 107:1–3, 7–10

IN the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and

named my discovery Christian Science. ...

This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of Immanuel, “God with us,” — the sovereign ever-presence, delivering the children of men from

every ill “that flesh is heir to.”

SH 347:14

Christ, as the spiritual

or true idea of God, comes now as of old, preaching the gospel to the poor, healing the sick, and casting out evils. Is it error which is restoring an essential element of Christianity, — namely, apostolic, divine healing? No; it is the Science of Christianity which is restoring it, and is the light shining in darkness, which the darkness comprehends not.

SH 135:21

It has been said, and truly, that Christianity must be Science, and Science must be Christianity, else one or the other is false and useless; but neither is unimportant

or untrue, and they are alike in demonstration. This proves the one to be identical with the other. Christianity as Jesus taught it was not a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light.

SH 170:14–15, 18

The demands of Truth are spiritual, and reach the body through Mind. ...

If there are material laws which prevent disease, what then causes it? Not divine law, for Jesus healed the sick and cast out error, always in opposition, never in obedience, to physics.

SH 14:18–22

Hence the hope of the promise Jesus bestows: “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; . . . because I go unto my Father,” — [because the Ego is absent from the body, and present with Truth and Love.]

SH 192:27–30

We walk in the footsteps of Truth and Love by following the example of our Master in the understanding of divine metaphysics. Christianity is the basis of true healing.

SH 25:13–16, 22–24, 28–31

Jesus taught the way of Life by demonstration, that we may understand how this divine Principle heals the sick, casts out error, and triumphs over

death. ...

Though demonstrating his control over sin and disease, the great Teacher by no means relieved others from giving the requisite proofs of their own piety. ... We must go and do likewise, else we are not improving the great blessings which our Master worked and suffered to bestow upon us.

SH 428:30–32; 429:4

The author has healed hopeless organic disease, and raised the dying to life and health through the understanding of God as the only Life. ... We must begin, however,

with the more simple demonstrations of control, and the sooner we begin the better. The final demonstration takes time for its accomplishment. When walking, we are guided by the eye. We look before our feet, and if we are wise, we look beyond a single step in the line of spiritual advancement.

SH 162:4

Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with

Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind.

SH 390:12–13, 20–21, 23–29, 32–2; 391:7–9

When the first symptoms of disease appear, dispute the testimony of the material senses with divine Science. ... Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon the thought. ... You have no law of His to support the necessity either of sin or sickness, but you have divine authority for denying that necessity and healing the sick.

“Agree to disagree” with approaching symptoms of chronic or acute disease, whether it is cancer, consumption, or smallpox. ... Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit. ...

Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them.

SH 375:21

Palsy is a belief that matter governs mortals, and can paralyze the body, making certain portions of

it motionless. Destroy the belief, show mortal mind that muscles have no power to be lost, for Mind is supreme, and you cure the palsy.

SH 216:11–18

The understanding that the Ego is Mind, and that there is but one Mind or intelligence, begins at once to destroy the errors of mortal sense and to supply

the truth of immortal sense. This understanding makes the body harmonious; it makes the nerves, bones, brain, etc., servants, instead of masters. If man is governed by the law of divine Mind, his body is in submission to everlasting Life and Truth and Love.

SH 218:27–29, 32–2; 219:20–21

The Scriptures say, “They that wait upon the Lord . . . shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” ... When we wake to the truth of being, all disease, pain, weakness, weariness, sorrow, sin, death, will be unknown, and the mortal dream will forever cease. ...

... Science includes no rule of discord, but governs harmoniously.

SH 254:2–6

Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can “run, and not be weary; . . .

walk, and not faint,” who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement.

SH 262:10–14

We must reverse our feeble flutterings — our efforts to find life and truth in matter — and rise above the testimony of the material senses, above the mortal to the immortal idea of God.

SH 192:19–21

In Science, you can

have no power opposed to God, and the physical senses must give up their false testimony.

SH 21:9

If the disciple is advancing spiritually, he is striving to enter in. He constantly turns away from material sense, and looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit. If honest, he will be in earnest from the start, and gain a little each day in the right direction, till at last he finishes his course with joy.

SH 20:27–4

St. Paul wrote, “Let us

lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us;” that is, let us put aside material self and sense, and seek the divine Principle and Science of all healing.

If Truth is overcoming error in your daily walk and conversation, you can finally say, “I have fought a good fight . . . I have kept the faith,” because

you are a better man.

SH 444:10

Step by

step will those who trust Him find that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

SH 254:10–12

When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.

SH 326:20–21

Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way.

Hymn. 565

Rise up and walk, take up your bed. / With these few words the sickness fled. / Stretch forth your hand. Receive your sight. / Jesus' commands reveal God's might. / You are God's purpose, His great design. / Beautiful, blameless, His child divine. / Holding your thought to the good and the true, / Spirit will form you anew.

REFRAIN / Rise up and walk! God made you free, / Born of His liberty. / Carefree and strong, you are His song, / Perfect for all to see. / Mountains and seas, great rising trees, / Echo the joyous song: / Heaven is here, harmony's bliss / To everyone belongs.

Cleanse the lepers, heal the sick. / Cast out demons. Raise the dead. / Truth is revealed in every place, / Throughout all time, throughout all space. / Right in this moment, doing God's will / “These works shall you do, and greater still.” / Standing triumphant upon holy ground, / Songs of the angels resound. / / REFRAIN

Hymn. 412

O dreamer, leave thy dreams for joyful waking, / O captive, rise and sing, for thou art free; / The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking, / Unloosing bonds of all captivity.

He comes to bless thee on his wings of healing; / To banish pain, and wipe all tears away; / He comes anew, to humble hearts revealing / The mounting footsteps of the upward way.

He comes to give thee joy for desolation, / Beauty for ashes of the vanished years; / For every tear to bring full compensation, / To give thee confidence for all thy fears.

He comes to call the dumb to joyful singing; / The deaf to hear; the blinded eyes to see; / The glorious tidings of salvation bringing. / O captive, rise, thy Saviour comes to thee.

Hymn. 139

I walk with Love along the way, / And O, it is a holy day; / No more I suffer cruel fear, / I feel God's presence with me here; / The joy that none can take away / Is mine; I walk with Love today.

Who walks with Love along the way, / Shall talk with Love and Love obey; / God's healing truth is free to all, / Our Father answers every call; / 'Tis He dispels the clouds of gray / That all may walk with Love today.

Come, walk with Love along the way, / Let childlike trust be yours today; / Uplift your thought, with courage go, / Give of your heart's rich overflow, / And peace shall crown your joy-filled day. / Come, walk with Love along the way.
